Program Description
The Department of Chicana/o Studies provides a venue for the interdisciplinary and multi-method study of social justice as evidenced within Chicana/o/x, Latina/o/x, and Indigenous cultures, communities, and experiences. The Department was created to respond to the need for critically educated K-12 teachers and counselors, those working in the law and public policy, as well as within social and environmental justice non-profit organizations. Over the past fifty years, students have become advocates for their communities, aided by their education in Chicana and Chicano Studies. We were the first in the nation to create a doctorate of Chicano/a Studies and we continue to lead the field with faculty producing innovative research and new Ph.D.s entering the professoriate.

Program Highlights
Our Department emerged out of student demands from the late 1960s. One of those key student leaders, Cástulo de la Rocha, is now the President and CEO of AltaMed Health Services, and our students can work as interns for the company.
Our Professor Gerardo Aldana served as a Maya Consultant for the Marvel film Wakanda Forever, and he also played the Chair of the UN in the movie
During the historic Women's March at Washington DC in 2017, our Professor Aída Hurtado was invited to speak in front of an estimated 3 million people in attendance. She spoke about the significance of educating our movement leaders with intersectional feminism as mobilization tools.
